Why You Cannot Reschedule Your US Visa Appointment, and What to Do About Each Cause

The reschedule option is missing, greyed out, or throws an error. There are twelve reasons that happens, they have different fixes, and telling them apart takes about two minutes.

Twelve reasons a US visa appointment will not reschedule: no confirmed booking yet, the MRV fee not recognised, an expired MRV receipt, attempts used up, the roughly 48 hour lock before the interview, an empty calendar, group bookings, a changed DS-160, a temporary lock from excessive refreshing, reduced post operations, and the wrong scheduling portal

Short answer

Almost every failed reschedule comes down to one of twelve causes, and the most common one is that the calendar genuinely has nothing in it, which is not a fault at all. The next most common are the roughly 48 hour lock before your interview, reschedule attempts already used up, and an MRV fee the system has not recognised yet. Work down the list below in order and you will know which one you have.

Before you troubleshoot anything

Read your own account first
Attempts remaining and lock messages are displayed in the portal. That text overrides every article, including this one
An empty calendar is not an error
If the option is live and no dates show, nothing is broken and nothing has been spent
Do not keep clicking
A failed attempt can still consume a reschedule, and heavy refreshing can get your account temporarily restricted
Countries are on different platforms
Screens and rules differ. A guide written for another country will not match yours

Thirty second triage

Three questions, in this order. They separate twelve causes into three groups and stop you applying the wrong fix.

  1. Is the reschedule option there at all? If you cannot see it, the cause is structural: no confirmed appointment, an unrecognised or expired fee, a category that cannot self-schedule, or a post not offering the function.
  2. Is it there but disabled, or does it warn you? That is an allowance or timing rule: attempts used up, or inside the lock window.
  3. Does it work, but show no dates? Nothing is wrong. The queue is simply full at your post. Skip to the last section, because this is the one no troubleshooting fixes.

Whatever this page says, the message inside your own account wins. Scheduling platforms differ by country and change without announcement, and the portal knows your case. Use this article to understand what the message means, not to overrule it.

Causes that are not your fault and not fixable

1. The calendar is empty

By a wide margin the most common reason a reschedule "does not work" is that there is nothing to reschedule to. The function is live, your attempts are intact, and the post has no earlier date available at the moment you looked.

This matters because it is the one cause where doing nothing is correct. You have not lost anything, and an attempt is only spent when a change actually completes. Whether it is normal for your post is easy to check: at a post with an interview wait measured in hundreds of days, a blank calendar is the default state, not an incident.

2. Your post is running reduced operations

Consular sections lose staff, and when they do they release fewer appointments or stop releasing them. Mission UAE spent much of 2026 in this position after an ordered departure, with routine visa services suspended before limited nonimmigrant appointments came back. During a period like that no amount of refreshing produces a date, because the supply is not there to find.

Check your own mission's website rather than the scheduling portal. A post that has suspended or reduced services says so on its own pages, and it is the only place that information is authoritative.

3. Your visa category cannot self-schedule at your post

Some categories and some situations are handled by the consular section rather than by the self-service calendar: certain petition-based cases, applicants returned for further processing, and cases already flagged for administrative handling. Where that applies the option is simply not displayed, and no fix exists on your side. The scheduling support channel for your country is the route.

Causes inside your account

4. You do not have a confirmed appointment yet

Rescheduling moves an existing booking. It is not a way to book from nothing. If you have paid the MRV fee but never accepted a date, there is nothing for the function to act on, and it will not appear.

The fix is the one people resist hardest: take whatever date the system offers, however distant. A confirmed appointment eleven months out is an asset. It is the thing you improve on, and without it you have no position at all.

5. The MRV fee has not been recognised

Bank transfers and cash deposits can take one to two business days to post against your scheduling account. Until the payment is recognised you cannot schedule or reschedule, and the screen gives no useful explanation. Wait a business day before concluding anything is wrong, and check that the receipt number was entered exactly as printed.

6. The MRV receipt has expired

The fee is generally valid for one year from the date of payment, and your interview has to be scheduled inside that window. An expired receipt cannot be revived, extended or appealed. A new fee is required, at the current rate.

This is a quiet trap for anyone who booked a distant date and then left it alone. If your appointment is fifteen months out and your receipt was paid a year ago, your ability to change anything ended before your interview did.

7. Your reschedule attempts are used up

Every scheduling platform caps how many times you may change an appointment on one MRV fee, and the cap is set per country. In India it has been one since 1 January 2025. Some countries allow three, some six. When the cap is reached the option is withdrawn and the portal usually says so explicitly.

There is no self-service recovery. A new MRV fee restores the ability to change, which is an expensive way to buy back a mistake, and it is why the rules on spending attempts are worth reading before you use one rather than after.

8. Your DS-160 was replaced after you booked

Submitting a new DS-160 generates a new confirmation number, and your appointment is tied to the old one. Where the numbers no longer match, scheduling actions can fail or behave unpredictably, and the error message will not tell you that is the cause.

If you have submitted a corrected DS-160 since booking, update the confirmation number in your scheduling profile before attempting anything else.

9. You are part of a group booking

Applicants grouped in one account are moved as a group. An individual change is often not offered, which reads as a fault when you are only trying to move yourself. It is deliberate. Splitting a group is a support request, not a self-service action, and attempting to force it can still cost you an attempt.

Causes about timing

10. You are inside the lock window

Changes typically close about 48 hours before the appointment, and some posts cut off earlier. Inside that window the option disappears and there is no self-service route back.

Two practical points. Act at least three business days before any date you might want to change, because maintenance windows, weekends, local holidays and time zone differences all eat into a 48 hour margin. And understand what happens if you simply do not attend: that is recorded as a no-show, not a reschedule, and recovering from it is materially harder than moving a date you still control.

11. A temporary restriction from excessive refreshing

This one is almost never explained plainly, and it is the reason a lot of applicants think they have been banned. Scheduling systems apply temporary restrictions, commonly in the region of 24 to 72 hours, to accounts generating a very high volume of requests. Symptoms are pages that stop loading, sessions that end immediately, or a calendar that returns nothing where it previously returned something.

The fix is to stop. Waiting it out clears it. Switching browser, device, network or account to keep going repeats exactly the behaviour that triggered it, and is a good way to turn a temporary problem into a longer one.

Causes that look technical and are not

12. You are on the wrong scheduling portal

Countries do not share one system. India, Canada and many others use the AIS portal at ais.usvisa-info.com. The UAE and others sit on a separate platform at usvisascheduling.com, having migrated in May 2025. The screens, the wording and the reschedule allowances are not the same.

So if a walkthrough tells you to click Continue and then Reschedule Appointment and no such sequence exists in your account, the likeliest explanation is that the walkthrough was written for a different country. Reach your scheduling site from your own mission's website rather than from search results, both because it is the correct one and because look-alike domains are a live problem in this space.

Genuine technical faults do happen, and they look different: the whole site is down, not one function. If everything else in your account works and only rescheduling does not, the cause is on this page rather than in their servers.

The two expensive mistakes people make next

Both of these come from the same instinct, which is to do something rather than wait.

Do not cancel a confirmed appointment to "reset" anything

Cancelling does not restore your reschedule attempts and does not put you at the front of any queue. What it does is remove the one confirmed date you hold, in a market where at some posts the next one is more than a year away. We hear this after the fact more often than any other single mistake, and it cannot be undone. If you are considering it, that is the moment to ask someone rather than click.

The second is paying a new MRV fee to unlock more attempts before checking whether the calendar has anything on it. If your post has no earlier dates, a fresh fee buys you the right to make changes you still cannot make. Establish that dates exist before you spend anything.

If your diagnosis was "attempts used up", read this next. The rules on how many changes each country allows, and what running out actually costs, are set out in can you reschedule a US visa appointment to an earlier date.

If the answer is an empty calendar

Most readers who work through this list end up here, and it is worth being straight about what the options actually are. Nothing on this list is a trick that produces a date. They are different answers to the question of who does the watching.

What to do when the function works and the calendar does not

Costs exclude the US government fees everybody pays: the MRV application fee, and the $250 visa integrity fee where your post is collecting it. Third-party pricing changes, so verify with each provider directly.

Option Cost What it actually does Best suited to
Do it yourself Free You check the portal and reschedule when something opens. Flexible dates, a soft deadline
Expedite request to the consulate Free A discretionary decision on documented urgency, attached to an existing booking. Medical emergencies, funerals, documented urgent travel
Slot-availability websites Free tier; paid alert plans, billed whether or not a date appears Surfaces availability and alerts you. You still book it yourself. Applicants who can act within seconds
$750 government paid expedite $750 per applicant, up front and non-refundable An interview within 10 business days, at participating missions only, currently Mexico and Canada, B-1/B-2 only. A hard deadline inside weeks, at one of those posts
Easy Visa Booking us From $100, paid only on success Our team takes on the rescheduling work for your consulate and keeps working it until an earlier interview date opens. The wider your acceptable date range, the more often it moves. Long waits, a fixed deadline, and no time to watch a portal

The categories above are the alternatives you are already comparing, not endorsements. We have no commercial relationship with any provider in them, and pricing models change, so verify current terms directly.

What our row gives you that the ones above it do not

  • You pay only if the date actually moves. From $100, charged when an earlier interview is secured. An alert plan bills you every month whether or not anything opens. The $750 lane is paid up front and not returned. Ours is the only paid row where a result you did not get costs you nothing.
  • The watching stops being your problem. Every free and alert-based route ends the same way: you, logged in, acting within seconds, at whatever hour the opening lands. Our team carries the rescheduling work instead.
  • Your remaining attempts get spent carefully. If your country allows one change and you have one left, the cost of using it on the wrong date is high. Knowing what a post typically releases is exactly the judgement that protects it.
  • A wide date range is the biggest lever you control. If you can accept any date inside a broad window rather than one specific morning, the odds of moving your interview go up sharply. Tell us the widest range your travel plans allow and we will tell you honestly how it looks before you commit to anything.
  • Nothing is asked on trust. A named founder, real support channels, published terms and refund policy, and a written statement that nobody can promise you a date. Read all of it before you speak to us.

If you can log in every couple of days without it wearing you down, and your travel is flexible, do it yourself. That row is free and it works. And if your reason for needing an earlier date is a documented emergency, the free expedite request beats anything we can offer, so make that first.

The reader who should not pay anybody, us included, is the one whose diagnosis was cause number 5 or number 11. A fee that has not posted yet and a temporary restriction both fix themselves within a couple of days. Wait, and spend nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the reschedule button greyed out on my US visa appointment?

The three usual causes are that you are inside the lock window, typically the last 48 hours before your interview, that you have used every reschedule attempt your country allows on this MRV fee, or that the system has not yet recognised your fee payment. Your account normally displays which one applies, either as attempts remaining or as a message on the appointment screen, so read that before assuming anything is broken.

Does an empty calendar mean I cannot reschedule?

No. An empty calendar means there is nothing to move to right now, which is different from the reschedule function being unavailable. If the option is live and the calendar is blank, your attempts are intact and nothing has been spent. That is the good version of this problem, and it is the most common one. Come back and look again rather than trying to force it.

How long before my interview can I still reschedule?

Changes typically lock about 48 hours before the appointment, and some posts cut it off earlier. Because portal maintenance windows and time zones can shift that in practice, act at least three business days ahead of any date you want to change. Once the lock closes there is no self-service route, and missing an interview is treated as a no-show rather than a reschedule.

I keep refreshing and now nothing loads. Have I been banned?

Probably not permanently. Scheduling systems apply temporary restrictions to accounts that generate a very high volume of requests, and these usually clear on their own within about 24 to 72 hours. Stop, wait it out and come back rather than switching browsers, devices or networks to get around it, because repeating the behaviour is what triggered it in the first place.

My MRV receipt is not being accepted. What now?

Two possibilities. Bank payments and cash deposits can take one to two business days to appear against your account, so a receipt paid this morning may simply not have arrived yet. Or the receipt has expired: the MRV fee is generally valid for one year from payment, and your interview must be scheduled within that period. An expired receipt cannot be revived and a new fee is required.

Can I reschedule just one person out of a family booking?

Usually not. Where applicants are grouped in one scheduling account, the system moves the group together, so an individual change is often not offered at all. That is a design decision rather than a fault. If you genuinely need to split a group, contact the scheduling support channel for your country before you try to force it, because a failed attempt can still consume one of your reschedules.

Is the reschedule option different in different countries?

Yes, and this is the thing most guides get wrong. Countries sit on different scheduling platforms, so screens, wording and reschedule allowances differ. India, Canada and many others use the AIS portal, while the UAE and others use a separate system. A walkthrough written for one platform will describe buttons that do not exist on the other, so the fact that your screen does not match an article is usually not a fault in your account.

The bottom line

Twelve causes, and they sort into three honest groups. Some are supply problems you cannot touch: an empty calendar, a post running reduced operations, a category that is not self-service. Some are your account: an unrecognised fee, an expired receipt, a replaced DS-160, a group booking, no confirmed appointment to move. Some are rules: the lock window, the attempt cap, a temporary restriction.

Only the middle group has a fix you can apply this afternoon. The rules group is about having read them earlier. And the supply group is not a problem with your account at all, which is why the worst thing you can do on discovering it is start clicking.

If you take one habit from this page, make it this: before you touch anything, read what your own portal says about attempts remaining, and never cancel a confirmed date to see what happens.

What nobody can promise you

Nobody outside the US government can guarantee an interview slot, a timeframe, or a visa decision. We cannot either, and nothing on this page is a way to make a date appear that the consulate has not released. What we offer is that the work gets done properly and that you pay only if it produces a result.

Diagnosed it, and the answer was an empty calendar?

That is the most common ending to this page, and it is the one no fix helps with, because the only thing that changes an empty calendar is somebody watching it when it stops being empty.
