Short answer
Rescheduling changes three things: the interview date, the confirmation letter, and how many attempts you have left. It changes nothing else. Your DS-160, your MRV receipt, that receipt's one year validity and the standard your application is judged against are untouched. Your old slot goes straight back into the pool for somebody else, and there is no undo.

The sequence, step by step
Screens differ between the scheduling platforms used in different countries, but the shape is the same everywhere.
- Sign in and open your existing appointment. You need a confirmed booking for any of this to exist. If you do not have one, you are not rescheduling, you are scheduling, and the option will not be there.
- Check what your account says about attempts. Before anything else. The number of changes remaining is displayed, and it is the single most important piece of information on the screen.
- Choose which appointment to move. Where your country uses two appointments, biometrics and interview are separate items and you select one.
- Pick from what the calendar actually offers. You cannot request a date; you can only take one that is displayed. An empty calendar at this point means nothing is available, not that anything is broken.
- Confirm. This is the irreversible step. The change completes, the old slot is released, and your attempt count drops.
- Print the reissued confirmation. The letter is regenerated with the new details. The old one is now wrong and must not travel with you.
Steps two and five are the ones worth slowing down for. Everything else is mechanical.
The three things that change
1. The date and time
The obvious one, and the only one most people think about. Note that you are choosing from a displayed list rather than requesting a preference, so what is available in that moment is the whole universe of options.
2. The confirmation letter
Reissued with the new details. Take the current version, and check the date printed on it against what your account shows. Arriving with a superseded confirmation is a small administrative error with a very expensive outcome.
3. Your remaining attempts
Each completed change consumes one, and allowances are set per country: India has allowed one per MRV fee since 1 January 2025, some countries allow three, some six. When the count reaches zero the option is withdrawn and a new application fee is required before you can change anything again.
The important nuance: an attempt is spent by a completed change, not by looking. Signing in, checking the calendar and finding nothing costs you nothing. That is why patient checking is safe and impulsive moving is not.
The four things that do not change
This section exists because these four questions arrive constantly, and the anxiety behind them is usually unnecessary.

The two-appointment trap
In a number of countries, India among them, the process has two appointments rather than one: a biometrics and document collection appointment, and then the consular interview. They are separate bookings with separate dates, and rescheduling one does not move the other.
The rule that catches people, and it is worth stating in bold: the biometrics appointment has to come before the interview, generally by at least a day or two. The biometric data must be processed and available to the consular officer at the interview. Booking both on the same day can cause the interview to be cancelled automatically.
So when you move an interview earlier, you have to look at the pair:
- If the new interview date is before your biometrics date, you have broken the order. Move the biometrics appointment forward as well, and check the gap afterwards.
- If they land on the same day, fix it rather than hoping. An automatic cancellation of the interview is a far worse outcome than the day you gained.
- Moving biometrics may cost an attempt too, depending on how your country's platform counts changes. Check the counter before you start rather than after.
This is the single most common way a successful reschedule turns into a lost appointment, and almost nothing written about rescheduling mentions it.
The gain you should not take
An interview two weeks earlier is not worth taking if it puts your biometrics appointment on the wrong side of it and you cannot move that too. We would rather write that plainly than have you learn it from a cancellation notice. Before you confirm any move, look at both bookings together and satisfy yourself the order still works with a clear day or two between them.
What happens to the slot you gave up
It goes back into the availability pool, generally immediately, and somebody else takes it.
That is worth understanding properly, because it explains the whole market. The appointments other applicants find when they check are largely appointments people like you released a few minutes earlier. Cancellations, not bulk releases, are the realistic supply at a busy post, and they arrive continuously rather than on a schedule.
Two consequences:
- There is no undo. Your old date is not held for you, not for five minutes and not at all. If the new one turns out to be worse, you are moving again with another attempt, if you have one.
- Someone benefits from your indecision. If you release a date and then hesitate over the replacement, the calendar can move under you. Confirm the new one before you think about anything else.
Rescheduling versus simply not attending
These are not variations of the same thing and it matters.

The practical difference is that a reschedule leaves you holding something and a no-show leaves you holding nothing.
Which is the argument for acting three business days before any date you might not make, rather than deciding on the morning. Once the roughly 48 hour lock closes there is no self-service route left.

If the mechanics are not your problem

Can I undo a reschedule?
No. The change completes, the old slot returns to the pool and your attempt count drops. If the new date turns out to be worse and you have attempts left you can move again, spending another one. If you have none left, a new MRV fee is required before you can change anything. That asymmetry is why the decision to move deserves a minute of thought.
How long before my interview can I still reschedule?
Changes typically lock about 48 hours before the appointment, and some posts cut off earlier. Because maintenance windows, weekends, local holidays and time zone differences all eat into that margin, act at least three business days ahead. After the lock there is no self-service route, and simply not attending is recorded as a no-show rather than a reschedule.
The bottom line
A reschedule is a smaller event than most applicants fear and a more final one than most realise. Three things move: the date, the confirmation letter, the attempts you have left. Four things do not: the DS-160, the fee receipt, its validity window, and the way your case will be judged.
Two mechanics do the damage. The old slot is released the moment you confirm, so there is no undo. And where your country uses a separate biometrics appointment, an earlier interview that lands on or before that appointment can cancel itself.
So before you confirm anything: check the attempts counter, check both bookings if you have two, and be sure the improvement is worth what it costs you to take it.
What nobody can promise you
Nobody outside the US government can guarantee an interview slot, a timeframe, or a visa decision. We cannot either, and understanding the mechanics perfectly does not make a date appear that the consulate has not released.
