Two observations before anything else. The Australian problem is a visitor visa problem specifically: every other category was inside a month at every post. And Perth at about 15 days was, in that snapshot, one of the fastest posts anywhere in the world for a visitor visa, sitting in the same range as Abuja and Recife while Sydney sat alongside Toronto.
Who is actually in the Australian visitor queue
This filter reframes the whole page and almost nothing written about Australian waits mentions it.
Australian citizens do not generally need a B-1/B-2 visa. Australia has been in the Visa Waiver Program since 1996, so an Australian passport holder travelling for tourism or business for up to 90 days applies for an ESTA and never joins this queue.
So who is sitting in a 435 day line in Sydney?
- Non-citizens living in Australia whose own nationality is not visa exempt: permanent residents, skilled visa holders, students and their families. Australian PR carries no US visa exemption of its own. Your citizenship decides it.
- Australians who cannot use the waiver, which is a larger group than people assume: a previous US visa refusal, a prior overstay, certain arrest or criminal history, dual nationality with particular countries, or travel to certain countries after 2011 can all take you out of ESTA and into this queue.
- Anyone travelling for a purpose the waiver does not cover, or staying beyond 90 days.
That matters because it changes who this page is for. The typical person facing a 435 day Sydney wait is not a tourist choosing a slow option. It is frequently someone who has no alternative route at all, which is exactly why the gap to Perth is worth taking seriously.
Why Sydney and Perth are twenty nine times apart
Nothing in the rules differs. Same platform, same fee, same DS-160, same reschedule behaviour. A wait time is capacity divided by demand, and in Australia the demand is concentrated far more sharply than the capacity is.
Sydney is the country's largest consular operation and the default for the largest population centre. Melbourne takes the second share. Perth serves a smaller catchment on the other side of the continent, and the number of applicants who consider flying five hours for an interview is small.
The concentration feeds itself. Applicants pick the nearest post, that post gets longer, and the quiet one stays quiet because being quiet is not advertised. Perth is fast partly because almost nobody looks at it.
A 15 day queue is a snapshot, not a promise
Perth is fast because it is small, and small posts move fast in both directions. A modest surge in applications, or a single staffing change, moves a 15 day queue much further in percentage terms than it moves a 435 day one. Check the official tool the day you plan to act, not the number in this article, and do not buy a non-refundable domestic flight before you hold a confirmed appointment.
Using Perth: what to check before you book a flight
The move is legitimate, it is entirely inside the State Department's country of residence guidance because you are still applying where you live, and it is the largest free improvement available to most readers of this page. Four checks first.
- Does your account offer the post? Which Australian posts you may select is decided by your scheduling account, not by preference. Log in and look before planning anything.
- Can you actually attend? An interview is in person. Sydney to Perth is a five hour flight and a time zone, so it is realistically a night away. Melbourne at about 165 days may be the better trade for some readers than Perth at about 15.
- Have you booked something first? Take a confirmed appointment at whichever post will give you one, then improve on it. Holding nothing while you research is how people lose two months.
- How many reschedules do you have? Allowances are set per country, and a change that fails still risks consuming one. Know the number in your own account before you start moving things.

The $750 paid expedite
The State Department's expedited appointment pilot lets B-1/B-2 applicants pay $750 for an interview within ten business days, but only at designated missions. As of 19 August 2026 that means Mission Mexico and Mission Canada. No Australian post participates. The department has said further locations may be added while the pilot runs, and it is scheduled to close on 31 December 2026.
Anyone offering to sell you a $750 fast track in Sydney is selling something that does not exist there.
Leaving the country for a shorter queue
Flying to New Zealand, Singapore or elsewhere to escape the Sydney queue was a real strategy once. Since the guidance of 6 September 2025, updated 10 October 2025, applicants are directed to schedule in their country of nationality or legal residence, and those who go elsewhere are warned they may find it harder to qualify, with fees neither refunded nor transferred.
Perth is the legitimate version of that idea. Same benefit, domestic flight, no warning attached.

The ordinary expedited appointment request: free, discretionary, decided by the consular section on documented urgency. Medical emergencies, the funeral of an immediate family member, unavoidable urgent business travel, documented student start dates. Book a regular appointment first, because the request attaches to an existing booking, and keep that appointment until a decision comes back.
